The AWOS equipment to monitor weather conditions, the part for which the City of Torrance is responsible, is completed. The AWOS reports are available on the web: https://ktoa.awos.live/atc-view. This information is now used to prepare the ATIS broadcasts.
In order for this information to be available on a radio frequency when the tower is closed, the FAA must install and connect additional equipment in the tower. No information on the FAA project is available.
A memo to the City Council dated 12/16/2025, described the project as a design build agreement with Royal Electric Co. of Long Beach, CA, in the amount of $4,444,444, and a 20% contingency of $888,888.80, for a total not-to-exceed amount of $5,333,332.80, for Electrical Improvements at Torrance Municipal Airport - Zamperini Field, for a one-year (1) period beginning December 16, 2025, and ending December 31, 2026.
The memo also included an allocation of $2,750,000 from the Airport‘s Fund Balance to the Taxiway Lighting Replacement project.
According to the schedule proposed by Royal Electric, the project should have been completed by May 1, 2026. The proposal assumed a September 2025 start, but the contract was not awarded until December 2025.

At the last Airport Commission (7/9/2026), the staff did not provide much information on actual status of the project. Copies of project status reports have been requested.
EDITOR'S NOTE: As of 7/26/2026, the taxiway lights were inoperative except for taxiway Juliet and the eastern 100 feet or so of taxiway Alpha.
