AWOS IS OPERATIONAL

Scott Gore of the FAA advised this morning that the Torrance AWOS has been commissioned and data is available live at this link: Airport Weather AdvisorĀ® AWOS Liveā„¢ | KTOA. The METAR data is also being sent to WMSCR, making the weather information available on NWS (https://aviationweather.gov/data/metar/?ids=KTOA&hours=12). When the tower is closed, the AWOS weather will only be available online from the two sources above in the near-term.

FAA STUDIES TORRANCE FLIGHT RESTRICTIONS

Leon Jackler, AOPA's Vice President for Airports and Advocacy recently met with officials in the FAA Office of Airports, Western Pacific Region, to discuss the City of Torrance attempts to levy restrictions on flight operations at the airport. The FAA Chief Counsel's office is preparing a report on the situation.

Although the FAA likely will not take any action until the City tries to punish a pilot for performing a "prohibited operation" or there is an accident attributable to these prohibitions, the FAA has repeatedly advised that pilots should follow only the Federal Aviation Regulations and that the City has no authority to regulate the airspace. Any such local regulations are invalid, unenforceable and preempted by Federal law.
