On June 3, a one-year services agreement was awarded to Royal Electric of Sacramento, CA in the amount of $646,000 with an additional 10% project contingency for Site Preparation for an Automated Weather Observing System (AWOS) at Torrance Municipal Airport - Zamperini Field.
The system requires extensive site preparation before installation. The contract includes:
The work will be conducted in phases to minimize disruption to airport operations. The contractor will also coordinate with the AWOS equipment manufacturer, Mesotech. The equipment has already been procured.
Although the AWOS project is not funded by an FAA Airport Improvement Program (AIP) grant, it still must meet all applicable FAA Advisory Circulars (ACs). Work on the project will be performed in a phased approach to minimize disruptions to airport operations.
The Royal Electric proposal states that they entered the airfield lighting business in 1984 in Sacramento and has successfully completed projects at major hub airports such as LAS, SFO, OAK, DEN, DFW, IAH, PHX and SLC.
Kasandra Brown of the FAA has advised me that they currently expect their certification of the Torrance AWOS will be completed by the end of October.
